As you walk into the spacious mansion, the butler greets you at the door. Ushering you into the sitting room, the butler reminds you that the master is not in and the steward will be with you presently. You study your sumptuous surroundings in the butler’s absence until at last a tall, blonde man enters dressed in fine attire. He presses a work-gnarled finger under his long, small nose with marked emotion. “Forgive me; I have just come from addressing a personal matter. Let us discuss the matter at hand.”

Henry’s first and only ambition was to stand at the side of his best friend, Fendrel, the boy who would one day become the admiral of the Roman fleet. Henry knew no jealousy of his friend’s rank, for being a lowly seaman was the same as the emperor himself so long as he could serve on Fendrel’s ship.

Fendrel was also ambitious, but each time he was promoted he included as one of the conditions of his service that Henry be stationed aboard his new vessel. Over the years Henry provided not just dutiful service, but also advice in professional matters, support in personal matters, and even saved Fendrel’s life on more occasions than the two care to count.

When Fendrel was grievously wounded, the emperor commanded him to retire with honors, and yet he would not. At last it was Henry who convinced his friend that retirement was the right course of action. Thus Fendrel asked Henry to live in his mansion with him as the steward of his estates. More than ever, the two became like family.

Some months ago, however, Fendrel’s failing health has taken him away to hospice where he has remained since. Knowing nothing else than to be by his friend’s side, yet wanting to fill his duty as steward, Henry has suffered the pains of fear, doubt, and worry on Fendrel’s behalf. And now he can bear it no longer; he is determined to find a balm for Fendrel’s injuries at any cost.
