The tour guide leads you and the group further into the bottling warehouse, where a stout well-dressed man stands, his hands perched on the jeweled globe atop his cane. His strawberry-colored handlebar mustache—curving out from under a rather large nose—twitches twice. As if this were a sign of your coming, he turns and takes in the sight of your group. “Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to my humble enterprise.” He bows. “Do mind the bottles, won’t you? Wouldn’t want anything untoward happening, now would we?”
Leofrick is a self-made man. The son of a Cilician war-hero who fell in battle, Leofrick was taken in by Azat Jirair, one of his father’s comrades in arms. While in his mid-teens, however, his adoptive father was publically disgraced and stripped of all lands and title. Shuffled off the estate along with the rest of the now-destitute family, Leofrick vowed to restore Azat Jirair’s wealth and standing.
Taking up a trade with the travelling caravans, Leofrick took advantage of every opportunity to improve the status quo. Leveraging his natural charm to negotiate better prices on reagents, his cunning to learn alchemists’ trade secrets, and his ingenuity to innovate the glass-blowing process, he soon had cornered the market on bottling. This afforded himself and his family the respect and fortune they once had.
As soon as it was feasible, he bought back Jirair’s estate. By that time, unfortunately, Jirair had died, leaving Leofrick as the head of the household. Now, with so much gained, Leofrick understands firsthand how much his adopted father had to lose. As such, he is always on guard for attempts to besmirch his name, financially or personally, and will safeguard his family’s welfare at all costs.
